Quiet American - Acclaimed director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (ALL ABOUT EVE) sat in the director's chair for this 1958 adaption of a Graham Greene novel. Set in Indochina, the story centers around British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Redgrave) and a character known only as "The American" (Audie Murphy). As the country is gripped ever-tighter by the Communist uprising, the coupling find themselves in a battle over both their personal beliefs, and a woman whom they both desire and whose views they wish to mould into their own. Suspicion and intrigue ensue, with the two men doubting each others motives, and Mankiewicz allowing the film to burn slowly towards a surprising conclusion.
